Prof. Joseph A.M. Otubu
Professor Otubu (MBBS, DA, MPH, PhD, FRCOG, FMCOG, FWACS, Dip. Theology) was born on 2nd June 1946. He entered the Medical School at the University of Ibadan in 1966 and graduated with MBBS in June 1971. He did his residency in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City (1973 to 1975), Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle, UK (1975 to 1976), Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, UK (1976 to 1977) and Queen Charlotte Hospital, London (1977). He holds a Diploma in Anaesthesia (D.A) 1972 from University of Ibadan, a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH), 1980 from University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston, Texas, a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Experimental Gynaecology, from the University of London, UK.
Professor Otubu holds the Membership, MRCOG (1977) and later Fellowship, FRCOG (1989) of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. He holds the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College (FMCOG 1981) and the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS 1984). He is also a religious leader in Nigeria and holds a Diploma in Theology from the Prestigious Emmanuel College of Theology, University of Ibadan, Ibadan.
He was first person from Nigeria who did the subspecialty training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (1979 to 1981) at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Professor Otubu was Senior Registrar/Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Murtala Mohammed Hospital, Jos (1977) and Lecturer/Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Ahmadu Bello University/Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (1979). He was Senior Lecturer/Consultant (1984-1987), Associate Professor (1987-1990), and Professor/Consultant (1990-2001) at University of Jos/Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos Plateau State. He was head of Department, then Dean of Medical School at the University of Jos. He was the Pioneer Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Abuja and First Honorary Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologists to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada Abuja.
He has supervised several M.Sc. students and two PhD dissertations. He has trained over forty consultant Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and has served as external examiner to several medical schools in Nigeria and Ghana and NIPPS, Kuru. He is a recipient of several research grants and has published extensively. He has written several chapters in Textbooks and published over 100 scientific papers in national and international Journals. He was editor in chief, Tropical Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1989-1999) and now Editor in chief, African Journal of Infertility and Assisted Conception (2016 to date).
Professor Otubu has served as Member/Chairman on several health boards at various times; Presidential visitation panel to BUK, National committee on assisted reproductive health research and development, African Task force on reproductive health, WHO (Afro), Faculty board of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, NPMC, Nigerian Reference Committee, RCOG, PERFAR HP Fellowship Advisory Board, Delta State University Teaching Hospital Board etc. He is currently visiting Professor/Consultant to DASH hospital, Lafia, Garki Hospital, Abuja, JUTH, Jos and Federal Staff Hospital, Abuja. He developed a M.Sc., M.D, PhD program in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This will be the first in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Nigeria.
