Prof. Eugene E. Okpere
Prof. Eugene Okpere (MBBS, DSc, FMCOG, FWACS, FRCOG, FICS) graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1973 from the University of Ibadan, College of Medicine. He completed his Postgraduate training at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and proceeded to St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester where he passed the membership of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He returned to Nigeria in 1979 and was appointed Lecturer 1/Consultant in 1980. He progressed rapidly through the position of Senior Lecturer (1982, accelerated promotion) and Associate Professor (1985).
He was the Secretary of the Residents Doctors Association (1976), Chairman of the Residents Doctors Association (1980) and Chairman of Bendel State Nigerian Medical Association (1982). In 1983, he was appointed a representative at the UBTH Board of Management. In 1985, he was appointed the pioneer Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee. He moved to the position of Chairman, MAC in (1986). Between January (1990) and September (1996), he was both the Chief Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to Prince Abduraman El Sudury Hospital, Al Jouf, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Regional Consultant Al Jouf. On his return, (1996) he was promoted Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology; College of Medicine.
Professor Okpere has held over thirty other administrative positions including Chief Medical Director in the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and currently serving as the Chairman presidential implementation committee for the Teaching Hospital, Otukpo College of medicine/ Otukpo campus of the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (2011 till date).
In 2010, he was awarded the Honourable Doctor of Science by the Ambrose Alli University Ekpoma, this is arguably the first.
Professor Eugene Okpere is a Fellow of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and Fellow of the International College of Surgeons. He is also the author of two standard text books in Clinical Gynaecology and Obstetrics and also author of the recently presented “Current Issues in the Management of Tertiary Health Institutions in Nigeria”. He has over 70 papers in local and international peer reviewed journals. He has supervised over thirty postgraduate doctors for the Part II (final) of the National Postgraduate examination.
